Training
Two weeks today!
Last week I was in Leicester staying at the halls of residence for our Oasis training week. It was brilliant! Especially meeting all of the people training or on GAP years with Oasis and of course, finally getting to meet Sophie, Amber and Lizzie.
They are all lovely and we get on well, it was really weird when we had sessions on resolving team conflict as we have only really known each other week and cant imagine arguing with each other. We also found out who we would be paired with for our work and living. I am with Lizzie, who has just graduated from a place in London (African studies and development). We are both quiet and introverts who like our personal space so we are a good match, especially as the other two are more extroverts. We will still see a lot of each other though, about three times a week, and we get our retreat and holiday together. The holiday that we are going on sounds amazing. We are joining up ith the five girls that are going to Zimbabwe, including Lizzie who was in my year at college! We spend two weeks going round Zimbabwe on Safari, visiting Victoria falls, white water rafting (which I have been forbidden to do by Nana) walking with lions, and various other things which are really cool! Very excited, when Lisa told us about the option to do it we unanimously agreed. See aleady a great team making decisions!
We had about eight hours of talks a day , with the last one finishing at nine so it was a great but exhausting week, shown by the fact that we only went to Wetherspoons one night despite being just down the road. We had a health talk on Wednesday which scared me stupid, I think that we all came out of the room having changed our minds about going. For the rest of the week we were told to practice telling each other that we had diahorrea so that we coud get used to being open with each other, so most meal times one us would suddenly say something about it and we would all join in embellishing the story, you can imagine some of the stuff we came up with, nice.
On Friday one of the girls from the last team to go out to Moz a year ago came to talk to us and show us some of her pictures, it was really good and the whole thing started to sink in a bit. Ater she left I think that we were all a bit upset, the thought of leaving people behind and going away for so long, even Lizzie hasn't been away for six months before. It was strange being at the station saying goodbye to the girls, especially Sophie who I wont see again till we are at the airport. Lizzie and Amber will be at our commissioning service on Saturday, and after that the next time we see Lizzie will be at Johannesburg as she is going out a week early to visit family over there. It is weird that there is nothing left between now and going anymore, all summer there has been something else; holiday, results, training, but now it is the next big thing, very big thing. I have constant butterflies at the moment.
I tried packing my rucksack yesterday to see how much I could get into it. It was full! Sadly it was full despite having no shoes, towels or first aid kit in there, so I think I need to revise my packing list. I was checking up on the hand luggage rules to see how much I could get away with putting in there instead, luckily it said nothing about not being able to take sandals or deflated footballs onboard, so I might just get away with it.
A charity supporting Amber gave her loads of footballs and football kit to take away so between the four of us we have an etire football strip and eight football, which my experience in Ugnada tells me will be very much appreciated. i will never forget seeing the childrens faces light up when they saw that we had bought them a football.
I expect that I will update again before we actually go but in the meantime please pray for all of us, and the other teams as they go as well. x
